Who he is: "I am interested in engaging young people from all backgrounds in learning about coding and IT while appreciating that the IT profession is about more than coding - it is about design, abstraction, problem solving, critical inquiry, management, listening, and much more."
Q: What is a regular work day like for you?
A: In my job, I work with students, faculty, staff, middle and high schools, and companies. Teaching, research, speaking, consulting and community engagement make up my daily routine in various combinations.
Q: What do you love most about your career/major?
A: I love the fact that I can impact people’s lives in a positive and sustainable way.
Q: When did you become inspired to partake in tech? What was your inspiration?
A: I was inspired and motivated to do a PhD in the information systems field by mentor and professor, Dr. John Schermerhorn, at a time when the field was relatively new.
Q: What prepared you the best for your job/major today?
A: Both my educational and life experiences prepared me for my job today.
Q: What is the biggest obstacle you’ve been faced with, and how are/did you overcoming/overcome it?
A: The biggest obstacle I have faced in my current job is the lack of resources to support students who cannot afford or have access to higher education. I have been working on obtaining private grants to support the engagement of young students in our IT programs.
Q: What non-tech skill do you find most helpful/important that’s for your career?
A: Listening and communications skills.
Q: Where do you see yourself in ten years?
A: Continuing to teach and conduct research in the IT field.
Q: What’s your favorite coding language?
A: I’d rather manage people who code :-).
Q: What are some of your interests outside tech?
A: Reading, travel, and family activities.
Q: What are your plans for future projects?
A: I hope to write a book for practitioners on IT project management.
Q: What advice would you give a young person interested in tech now?
A: IT is ubiquitous in our lives; use it to have a positive impact on society and the work around you.
